A lot of people on this and other forums have had no success in using VLC to play a video in Wallpaper mode under Vista Home Premium. The cause of a lot of this frustration is that the instructions usually do NOT specify which version of VLC is referenced. I downloaded the latest version 1.0.3, set all the parameters and advanced setting to activate DirectX Wallpaper, but no success. SO, here is a solution that
works for me: Download the older version 0.8.6d and just install it. Open a video file and right click on it. You will NOT see the wallpaper
option. Don't bother hunting under Preferences>Advanced Options; you won't find anything about wallpaper or DirectX. Instead, close VLC.
Then, go to the Search function in the lower lefthand corner just above the Windows Icon. Type DirectX. Four VLC icons will appear. Select the one that says "Set Video Mode To DirectX (no video overlay)". Now fire up VLC again, open a video and right-click on it. Now the Wallpaper option appears! Click it, minimize VLC, and the video is playing as your Desktop background. Do not expect this to keep playing when you close VLC; after all, VLC is playing it. Hope this helps. I don't know whether this method also works for the
new 1.0.3 version.

I tried the steps (could not find the widget part in my VLC 0.9.9) and it worked! When I right click the wallpaper option is no longer greyed out, I can click it, and it works! Thanks!

I tried this, but once the video was done, the screen went to an image as a background. How can I continuously loop the video?
