How to Remove COM Surrogate Error in Vista
I have been using Windows Vista for 3 months now and one error that has always annoyed me is the “COM Surrogate Error ” . This error generally occurs when you open a folder thaty contains a lot of media files . The error is
Beleive me it is irritating . This error is mainly caused due to codecs i,e Divx , Nero etc which might not be compatible with Vista . Some possible solutions to this problem are
1) Upgrade your Nero or Divx to latest version .
2)You can disable Thumbnail previews . Though it is the easiet solution , no body will want to do it .
3)It might be caused due to ffdshow codec pack . Try some alternative
How ever i nice solution is available at Helpero . To solve the error follow the steps
- Click on start . Right Click on Computer and Select Properties
- Click Advanced System Settings located at top left corner
- Under the Performance field click settings
- Go to Data Execution Prevention Tab
- Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those i select
- Click the Add.. button
- Browse to c:windowssystem32 and select dllhost.exe . Click ok when done . You will get a windows like this
- Click Apply.
- Restart your computer and the problem will be solved .
i was try to solve this method but the error is cominig still.
what i do please give me some guidance.
Hi guys, this is really a solution, I have been blaming this problem to viruses but when i came to know about the tips here, i am now in a great relief.. Thanks a lot… good luck..
mine started with adobe reader 8.2 , every time i close an adobe file and sometimes when i open some , it shows the error message. then yesterday com surrogate started, today some other programs. its annoying
i tried the thumbnails , it didnt work
i dont have nero or divx installed
but i’ve got CCCP (combined community codec pack 2009 version)
could that be the problem??? oh and i have been using this laptop for 2years now without this problem
HELP… im also at the point of breaking my laptop

If you have Kaspersky 2011, there is a bug in it which causes COM Surrogate to hang. They’ve known about it for a while but seem to be keeping quiet pending a fix….Take a look here :-

-_- I Unistalled DivX.. Tried Data Execution Thingy.. Updated comp as much as i can (Window Updates) I Dont have Kasperspy, i dont have Nero.. and i did was download WeGame D:

it seems this is the more well-known, and most helpful, method of getting rid of it. However, no matter how many times i do this it just doesn’t work
Like you said, no one wants to get rid of their thumbnails. I definitely don’t. But i can’t find any other situation! It’s gotten to the point where a lot of my programs (mainly those used for subbing) won’t work properly at all. It seemed to all originate from downloaing a codec. I got rid of the codec but i still have this problem!
I’ll try re-installing/updating my codecs, but i honestly don’t think it’ll work…
i am at my wit’s end!!!
I tried this method and I still get the annoying error message. But the strange thing for me is that it only pops up while trying to generate a thumbnail for .avi files. It can generate thumbnails for all other media files except .avi files???
