Nintendo Wii being used to help patients in rehabilitation

13 February 2008 3 Comments

Doctor Wii You always thought that Wii was meant for playing games. But it can also be used for medical purpose in a technique called “Wiihabilitation”. Doctors have found out a new way of treating patients suffering from broken bones, surgeries, combat injuries.

The physical exercise which was involved in the rehabilitation process was often painful for the patients but this new and innovative therapy called “Wiihabilitation” is quite useful and painless.

Actually the games that are played on Wii require body movements which are similar to existing therapy exercises. However while playing the Nintendo Wii, patients get engrossed in the game and this helps them to forget about the pain. Hence the method is easier and more entertaining for the patients.

Games such as baseball, golf, tennis etc are being used by patients for treatment purposes and this practice is getting quite popular especially among youngsters. According to James Osborn of Herrin Hospital

”In the Wii system, because it’s kind of a game format, it does create this kind of inner competitiveness. Even though you may be boxing or playing tennis against some figure on the screen, it’s amazing how many of our patients want to beat their opponent.”

It is really an interesting and innovative technique. One more reason to get a Nintendo Wii.
