Vodafone and Airtel Reveal iPhone 3G pricing details in India

20 August 2008 6 Comments

iPhone3G Like many others, I was eagerly waiting for the launch of  iPhone in India hoping to get it as soon as it is launched. But that was shattered when Vodafone and Airtel revealed the price tag of iPhone in India. Here’s what’s mentioned on the Vodafone Website.

The iPhone 3G is available in 8GB and 16GB at Rs 31,000 and Rs 36,100 respectively. And as you have already pre-registered with us, you can get it before others do. All you need to do is drop in at a select Vodafone Store between August 20 and 21 and confirm your booking by paying Rs 10000 through cash or credit card. Don’t forget to show the iPhone booking SMS, which you would have received from us, when you visit the Vodafone Store to make the deposit.

Airtel have also announced there pricing and it is also the same. So that means have to shell out Rs. 31,000 (approx $756 ) for the 8GB model and Rs. 36,000 (approx $878) for the 16GB model. So it is definitely clear that Apple has failed again with there pricing strategy in India. Many people, including me were expecting the price of iPhone to be between Rs 15000- 20000 and they are sure going to be disappointed and who can blame them. The price is too much to pay for the iPhone 3G. So we might see only Apple lovers going for this device.

What are your thoughts on the pricing ? Are you going to buy an iPhone ?

This is a very bad policy by Apple/Vodafone/Airtel.

      It’s a total disaster IMO.

It will surely hurt Apple (in Indian Operations) in the long run.

      Hi all

There is a myth in the market place on low pricing of the product (reference price point being Rs. 8000 or Rs.12000/- which refers to AT&T pricing of USD 199 or USD 299).

The reports don’t factor the commitment which a customers needs to give for a particular Price Plan for a period of 24 Months in the case of AT&T. For O2 the commitment is for 18 months with selected plans.

But, if we calculate other cost like montly rental for voice, i.e., 69.99 (USD), the total cost of ownership for the period of 24 months for a 8 GB model comes around Rs.81000/-! The total cost of ownership for O2 is around Rs.200000/- over a period of 18 months.

In first look it looks high, but in long term, it is still cheaper in India. So, don’t stop urself from buying this lovely gadget…

      Hitesh
