Luckily WinMerge is there to the rescue. WinMerge is a visual text comparison application which can compare files and folders and present differences between them in visual format that is easy to understand and handle.

It is useful for determining what has changes between project versions and merging the changes between versions. The interface of the application is simple and it also integrates with the Explorer context menu. You can easily select the files that you want to compare and open them on the left and right side of the window. The areas that differ in the files are highlighted. You can also use it to compare Microsoft Office and other text files. You can merge the contents by either replacing them on the left or the right file. In the beginning, it might be difficult to comprehend but you will soon get the hang of it. You can even use it to compare Folder Contents. Just select the two folders that you want to compare, right click and select “WinMerge” from the context menu. You will get a display which shows files in both the folders, which files are identical and which are in left and right folders.

The program can save you a lot of time and it is a life saver when several people are working on the same files. It is a freeware as well as open source and supports all the version of Windows.
