Everything – Small and Fast Desktop Search Engine
Everything is a free and fast Desktop Search Engine. The default Windows Search is quite slow and if you are looking for a fast program that can search your files and folders in seconds, then this one is the right one for you. The program can index your entire hard drive in seconds. However the program only works with NTFS drive.
This program can index files very fast and it uses a different method for doing so. It uses the raw Master file Table for building its database and hence it is very fast. Around 1,000,000 files should take around a minute to get indexed. But this feature only works on the NTFS drives. After the initial indexing, you don’t have to worry about indexing again as it will take care of it. When you start the program, it will display everything, all the files and folders and then it will start eliminating all the files and folders that do not match the search query. This process is very fast. The search expression supports Boolean expression, wildcards and regular expressions. You can sort the search results by path, filenames or file size. One of its best features is that it offers right click menu integration for on the spot searching. Another interesting feature it has is that it can run as an HTTP server so that you can search and download files remotely. Its memory consumption depends on the amount of files indexed. Normally, it might take around 15-20 MB of RAM.
This is the fastest Desktop Search program i have seen so far. The indexing as well as searching are super fast. If you have a FAT drive, convert it to NTFS so that you can use it with this. It is a freeware and works on Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista. A portable version is also available.
